Handwoven in Bobai, Guangxi — bamboo, maize, seagrass

One place, named.

Most "handwoven" labels hide a vague origin and a sentence anyone could have written. We do the opposite: we tell you which town in Bobai, Guangxi it came from, what it is made of, how many steps it took, and why one piece costs 30 dollars and another costs 90.

Three things we refuse to be vague about

One place

Not "made in China". Bobai, in Guangxi, is one of southern China's centres for weaving bamboo, maize and seagrass. The skill has passed through generations of households there — it is a home trade before it is an industry.

Made slowly

The material is sun-dried for 7 to 15 days, not kiln-dried in one. The strips are split by hand to within about a millimetre, because the width of a strip decides how tight the weave can be. No machine has replaced that step.

Explained properly

We do not sell with words like "artisanal" or "crafted with love". We explain how the piece is made, which step in that sequence costs the money, and how you can tell a good one from a bad one yourself.

What we are making first

Everything we start with is small, flat-packable and cheap to ship — because freight, not material, is what usually decides whether a handmade piece can survive its own price tag.

Wall pieces

Small woven wall pieces, packed flat. Size, weave density and colour can be changed per order.

Trays & baskets

Nested trays and shallow baskets. They stack inside each other, so a dozen fit in one carton.

Made to order

We do not hold stock. Households in Bobai start weaving when the order is placed, which is why the size and the weave can be yours rather than ours.

How one piece actually gets made

Four steps, and only one of them can be done by a machine. This is also the order in which the money is spent.

STEP 1

Sun-dried

7 to 15 days in the open, so the split strips bend instead of cracking. Kiln drying takes one day and costs less.

STEP 2

Split by hand

Strips are pulled to within about a millimetre of even. Their width sets how tight the finished weave can be.

STEP 3

Woven at home

The weaving itself happens in households around Bobai, one piece at a time, on a form the maker has used for years.

STEP 4

Packed flat

Pieces nest or lie flat, so twelve travel in one carton. Freight is billed on volume, and this is where most handmade margins die.
